Getting your Driver’s License

Are you at the age where you can go and get your Driver’s License? Maybe you need your parents’ permission too, or just maybe you are old enough to avoid that. There are a few things that apply no matter where you are.

Your first step is to get the study guide that your state will have for new drivers. Often you can find this online, or at their local office (often called the department of motor vehicles).

This manual will tell you all about what you need to get your drivers license. It will include a decent amount of understanding on driving, traffic safety, and the laws you have to follow on the road. You will want to know everything in this manual as you will no doubt be tested on it more than once.

Most states will require you to take a written test, and when you pass that, will issue you a learner’s permit. With this you can usually drive when accompanied by a licensed driver in good standing, though some states will require special driving instructors instead.

With that you will be able to practice what you read on the road. Being on the road can be dangerous if you don’t pay attention so listen. Apply your knowledge from your manual, and do your best to practice everything in it.

Just about anywhere these days, there will be a classroom course or 2 you will be required to take. This will build on everything in the manual, defensive driving, and an extensive portion about drinking and driving. Some states require this before the final road test, whereas others will require it before you can even take their written test. Your manual will explain that as well. Since you want to drive safely, pay attention in these courses and they will take you a long way, and there will be a test on completion.

In the end, it all comes down to a road test. And unlike many other tests, anything less than perfect will fail you. Be sure to pay strict attention to every detail, right down to the seatbelt, and proper paperwork for the vehicle you take the test in.

In the end, if you have passed, pat yourself on the shoulder, however there may be a probation period, and other restrictions up front, and don’t get caught violating any of them, as it may get your new license revoked for some time. And a final note, don’t drink and drive as it is definitely a way to be dangerous, and even if you don’t hurt someone, it will get you in deep trouble.
